Nicotine, in it's natural form, is has a crystalline structure, a salt. This gives it a stable chemical structure.

After extraction nicotine is usually de-protonated. This gives us regular freebase nicotine, the kind we have been using in e-liquids for ages. Freebase nicotine is easier for the body to absorb than it's natural salt format, and so, more suitable for vaping.

Commercially available nicotine salts have had benzoic acid added, with the effect of making it vaporize at a lower temperature than salts usually do.

It's important to note here that the nicotine contained in either freebase or salts is the same nicotine with the same effects. Both are usually packaged and shipped in a propylene glycol suspension and later blended with VG and flavorings.

Freebase nicotine has a higher pH level which means that higher concentrations can be irritating to the throat. For this reason Salts are often used in applications that use these higher concentrations such as mtl and pod systems and a lot of salt based e-liquids only come in these higher formulations.

For this reason a lot of people assume that salts are only for mtl and can't be used in subohm systems. This is completely untrue. Using a lower concentration salt based liquid in a subohm system will give you exactly the same effect as using the equivalent strength freebase, but with less of a throat hit.

So, if you are looking for a more effective e-liquid for your pod or mtl setup salts may be the way.
On the other hand if you are vaping subohm and want to reduce the throat hit you get salts may be useful to you
